An original Shin-hanga woodblock print by Tsuchiya Koitsu titled 'Akashi Harbor in the Seto Inland Sea' (瀬戸内海 明石の港, Seto Naikai Akashi no Minato). The work is dated in the right margin as having been created in March of Showa 13 (1938). It depicts a tranquil harbor scene with traditional sailing vessels and a shoreline town at dusk. The print is an ōban size, measuring approximately 15 x 11 1/4 inches. Tsuchiya Koitsu (土屋 光逸, 1870–1949) was a prominent Japanese artist of the Shin-hanga ('new prints') movement. He began his artistic training at a young age under the ukiyo-e master Kobayashi Kiyochika. Koitsu is celebrated for his landscape prints that masterfully capture the effects of light and atmosphere, creating serene and often romantic scenes of Japan. He collaborated extensively with the publisher Doi Teiichi (Doi Hangaten) from the 1930s until his death, producing his most famous and sought-after works during this period.
