Original 19th Century Japanese Woodblock Print by Toyokuni III - Ichikawa Danjuro VIII as Daruma

Product ID: 242051299

Description

This exquisite original 19th-century Japanese woodblock print measures 9 1/2 x 14 1/2 inches and is created by the prominent artist Toyokuni III, also known as Kunisada. The print features the celebrated kabuki actor Ichikawa Danjūrō VIII depicted humorously as a Daruma doll. Please note that the artwork has significant fading, particularly noticeable when comparing the front to the heavy ink bleed-through on the reverse side, alongside a faint vertical centerfold that runs down the print's middle. The paper shows general age-toning, minor soiling, and handling wear, contributing to its overall charm as a historical piece of art. The artist's signature, as well as publisher and censor seals, allow for precise dating to c. 1849-1851. While condition issues may present a challenge, this remains a valued addition for collectors of 19th-century ukiyo-e prints.
