Original 19th Century Japanese Woodblock Print by Utagawa Hiroshige: Asakusa Ricefields

Product ID: 242051278

Description

This exquisite original 19th century Japanese woodblock print by Utagawa Hiroshige depicts the iconic 'Asakusa Ricefields and Torinomachi Festival' from his celebrated series 'One Hundred Famous Views of Edo'. Measuring approximately 9 3/4 x 14 1/2 inches, the print has been remargined and features many restored wormholes, particularly visible in the sky and window frame areas. A void in the top right corner has been filled/restored. The print suffers from significant color fading and has been laid down on a backing paper, which is itself heavily stained and discolored. Additional condition issues include visible foxing and general age-related toning throughout. Despite these concerns, Hiroshige's mastery shines through in this distinctive piece that highlights a cat gazing out toward Mount Fuji during a festive gathering.
